You Belong Here

Meeting you where you are means honoring and exploring the fullness of who you are. There is no story too deep, too painful, or too shameful to be held here. Your experiences—whether from dreams, memories, or current events—carry profound feelings and meaning that deserve attention and care.

Together, we will approach your emotions as part of your wholeness, not just something to understand intellectually. We’ll explore them physically, relationally, and through the present moment, allowing for a deeper connection to yourself and the life you are living.

“She who reconciles the ill-matched threads
of her life, and weaves them gratefully into a single cloth–
it’s she who drives the loudmouths from the hall
and clears it for a different celebration

where the one guest is you.
In the softness of the evening
it’s you she receives.”

Here we are 🌎📍

Taking care of yourself includes tending to your mental and emotional well-being. My counseling practice offers a safe and supportive space for you to explore and grow. With the right container, a counselor can gently challenge you to examine how you perceive the world and uncover the patterns shaping your life. At its heart, healing is a path to more fulfilling relationships—with yourself and with others.

Trauma is not what happens to you. It's what happens inside you as a result of what happened to you… Healing is therefore the restoration of that connection, the restoration of wholeness.”

- Gabor Mate

My approach is somatic, relational, and experiential, meaning we will connect with your body to explore how it holds memories and emotions, while also developing non-judgmental awareness around your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. We’ll work together to understand how early beliefs and unconscious patterns shape your experience, creating space for healing, insight, and lasting transformation.

This website gives you a glimpse into who I am and how I work. If you’d like to see whether we’re a good fit, I invite you to schedule a free 20-minute consultation. I look forward to connecting with you.

No two people are the same, and I tailor my approach directly to each individual. That being said, I do draw from a number of modalities that I have found work best for my clients. I utilize a combination of Depth psychology, Psychodynamic theory, Gestalt therapy, and Trauma-informed Somatic techniques.

Our Focus:

  • Anxiety

  • Trauma

  • Relationships

  • Stress management and work burnout

  • Spirituality

  • Femininity & gender roles

  • Racial/ethnic/cultural identity

  • Psychedelic preparation & integration

  • Intergenerational & ancestral trauma

  • Manage boundaries and healthy collaborative relationships

Modalities I draw from…

  • Our early relationships with caregivers leave a deep imprint on how we connect with ourselves and others. When those early bonds were marked by inconsistency, neglect, or pain, they can leave emotional wounds that shape how we experience relationships, emotions, and self-worth as adults.

These patterns often show up in the present moment—sometimes as subtle sensations in the body, other times as emotions, reactions, or relational dynamics. Together, we’ll create space to gently explore what arises in the here and now, paying attention to your thoughts, feelings, and the sensations in your body. The present moment holds valuable insights into the ways these early imprints may still be influencing your life.

Our work will unfold naturally, guided by what feels meaningful to you. We’ll focus on:

    • Exploring the Present Moment: By tuning into sensations, emotions, and patterns that arise in our sessions, we can discover how your past experiences live in your body and influence your current life. This mindful exploration helps foster deeper awareness and healing.

    • Using the Relational Field: The dynamic between us can serve as a mirror for how you relate to others and to yourself. Together, we’ll notice what emerges in the relational space, uncovering patterns of connection, disconnection, and the potential for new ways of being.

    • Resourcing and Grounding in the Body: Emotions often take root in the body, and early attachment wounds can make them feel overwhelming or disconnected. We’ll explore ways to ground and resource yourself, helping you feel safer and more present in your body.

This work isn’t about solving or fixing but about creating a safe, supportive space to reconnect with yourself. Through curiosity and care, we’ll gently uncover insights that allow for greater freedom, self-understanding, and connection.

  • Somatic noticing comes from the word soma, meaning “body” in Greek. It involves becoming attuned to the sensations and experiences within your body as a way to connect more deeply with yourself. This practice is about noticing physical feelings—such as tension, warmth, heaviness, or lightness—without needing to analyze or change them. By paying attention in this way, we cultivate a stronger connection between your mind and body, which is essential for holistic healing.

    • Presence with Sensations: Instead of avoiding or overthinking your body’s signals, we focus on simply being present with them. I will guide you in noticing the physical manifestations of your emotions, such as a fluttering in your chest or tightness in your shoulders, with curiosity and without judgment. This practice can be deeply grounding and transformative.

    • Integration: By becoming aware of and accepting these sensations, we can create space to process emotional experiences in the present moment. This allows us to notice subtle signs of activation before they grow into larger triggers. Together, we’ll deepen your understanding of your emotional state and work toward greater balance and regulation.

    • Resourcing: Resourcing involves identifying what helps you feel safe, calm, and grounded, both internally and externally. This might include connecting to positive memories, relationships, or sensations in the body that feel steady and secure. Learning to resource in this way provides tools for navigating intense emotions or sensations with more ease.

Somatic noticing offers a way to meet yourself in the here and now, using the body’s wisdom to guide healing and integration. Together, we’ll explore how this practice can support your growth and well-being.

  • Parts work sessions are more experiential than traditional talk-based approaches. Instead of just discussing parts, we connect with them directly, which can sometimes feel unfamiliar or even strange, as it invites you into a more imaginative and somatic space. As Richard Schwartz, the founder of Internal Family Systems, says:

"The secret is that the Self is already there, just beneath the surface of the protective parts of you. You don’t have to force it to emerge; you just have to unblend and open space."

We usually begin by catching up and noticing if any parts were particularly active during your week or are present in the session. From there, we’ll focus on one part at a time, gently separating from it to better understand its needs and fears. This often involves closing your eyes and becoming open to the visual or somatic sensations that arise.

I will guide you in building a relationship with this part through curiosity and dialogue, asking questions like, “What is this part afraid of?” or “What does it want to share with you?” This process helps foster understanding and trust with your inner system, much like making peace within a family.

As you connect with your parts in this way, new ways of relating to them often emerge. This creates opportunities for healing, integration, and a sense of inner harmony, guided by the wisdom of your Self—the calm, compassionate core within you.

  • Mindfulness is about being fully present in the moment, noticing your thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations without judgment. It’s a practice of observing what arises and accepting it as it is, without trying to change or avoid it. Together, we’ll explore mindfulness as a way to develop greater awareness and acceptance of your internal experiences, particularly when working through trauma.

As trauma specialist Bessel van der Kolk says:
"Trauma is about being disconnected from the present moment. Mindfulness gives us the tools to reconnect—to our bodies, to our emotions, and to the world around us."

    Here’s what we’ll focus on:

    • Mindfulness Techniques: You’ll learn practices like mindful breathing, body scans, and meditations to help you tune into your present-moment experience and build a foundation of calm and presence.

    • Grounding Practices: I’ll guide you through grounding techniques to stay connected to the here and now, especially when faced with distressing or overwhelming emotions. These practices help create a sense of safety and stability in your body and mind.

    • Observing Thoughts and Emotions: We’ll practice noticing thoughts and emotions as they arise, allowing them to exist without becoming overwhelmed or reactive. This approach fosters greater emotional regulation and self-awareness.

Mindfulness provides a gentle and supportive way to reconnect with yourself, even in challenging moments. Together, we’ll create a safe space to explore these practices and integrate them into your daily life.

  • Active imagination is a technique developed by Carl Jung that involves engaging with the images and figures that emerge from the unconscious mind. It is a way of dialoguing with different parts of the psyche to achieve greater self-understanding and healing. Together, we will work on:

Conscious Engagement: I hold space for you to act out mages, figures, or scenarios that arise in your imagination, often by visualizing and metaphors.

Dialogue and Exploration: Sometimes having conversations with these imagined figures, asking questions and receiving responses. This process helps in exploring and understanding different aspects of the self.

Integration of Parts: By engaging with these inner figures, we can uncover and integrate repressed or split-off parts of themselves, leading to greater wholeness and balance.

  • My work is about helping you explore and understand yourself on a deeper level. Often, there are parts of us—our thoughts, feelings, and habits—that we don’t fully notice but that shape how we experience life. Depth psychology and coaching can help bring these hidden parts into the open, so you can work with them more consciously.

One of the ways we can access these hidden parts is through dreams, images, and your imagination. Dreams, in particular, can offer powerful guidance and clarity, as they reveal thoughts, feelings, and desires that aren’t always accessible in waking life. Together, we might explore and interpret your dreams, looking at the symbols, themes, and emotions they hold. This process can uncover unresolved conflicts, fears, and wishes, helping you gain a deeper understanding of your inner life.

The goal is to co-create meaning from these messages, turning insights from dreams into tools for growth and healing. By bringing unconscious material into conscious awareness, we promote greater self-understanding and integration.

I don’t follow a fixed program or one-size-fits-all approach. Instead, I create space for what feels most alive and important to you right now. Together, we let the process unfold naturally, focusing on what feels meaningful to you.

Our connection is also an important part of the work. How we relate to each other can sometimes reflect patterns in your life. By noticing what comes up between us, we can gain valuable insights into other areas of your experience.

If it feels helpful, I might suggest tools or practices to support your process. But everything begins with what feels most relevant to you.

My Offerings

Individual Zoom and In-Person Somatic Counseling Sessions (50 Min)

I offer both Zoom and in-person sessions, creating a space where we can explore your emotions with respect and cultural sensitivity, working together to make meaning and foster transformative learning.

In therapy, I hope to create a space where you can safely explore yourself and how you're feeling right now. Together, we’ll uncover what’s happening in your present and, when you're ready, dive into your past to see how it’s shaped who you are today and the way you relate to others. You might find that some parts of you—thoughts, behaviors, or traits—feel like they belong, while others don’t. I believe that every part of you has a reason for being, but some may no longer align with who you are or who you want to become. Let’s explore these parts together, challenge old beliefs, and discover what truly supports you in the here and now.

Preparation, Journey Work, and Integration (8+ Hours)

I offer a safe and non-judgmental space where we can explore your intentions in altered states of consciousness together. From preparation to journey to integration, you’ll receive personalized, one-on-one support. With your consent, I’ll also provide an analysis and write-up of the key themes that emerged during your journey. My goal is to ensure your experience is one of healing, transformation, alignment, and expansion, grounded in connection and trust.

Drawing inspiration from the work of pioneers like Stan Grof, R. Coleman, and Kylea Taylor, I take a non-directive approach. We’ll start by establishing clear agreements and intentions, ensuring that you feel grounded and prepared before entering the journey space. Afterward, we’ll connect in integration sessions to reflect on your insights, move through any limitations, and access your inner truth and strength—together.

About Joanna🌱

Hi, I’m Joanna, a trauma-informed relational somatic counselor.

My goal is to support you in cultivating deeper fulfillment, connection, and freedom in your relationships—with yourself and others.

Clients often describe me as warm, grounded, and non-judgmental. As a Bay Area native plant, I grew up in Fremont and relocated to Berkeley in 2024. In my free time, I enjoy reading, hosting tea gatherings, exploring contact improvisation and authentic movement, discovering scenic spots, and basking in the California sunshine playing music with my handpan.

Before stepping into counseling, I explored a variety of careers—from financial analysis at a high-growth startup to co-founding a company teaching coding fundamentals, and working as a UX/UI product design consultant for Fortune 500 companies. These roles shaped my understanding of how we build foundations—both internally and externally. After taking a year off to embark on a spiritual journey of self-discovery and wholeness, I found my calling in counseling, mindfulness meditation practices, facilitating various support groups, holding ritual space, and a passion for psychedelic guide work.

In my practice, I help clients cultivate a cohesive and confident sense of self. Together, we’ll explore the narratives and beliefs that may disempower you or obscure your truth. By strengthening your inner foundation, you can navigate life with clarity, resilience, and alignment with your values—creating a life that feels sustainable and deeply fulfilling.

Having sought belonging in various cultures and communities, I ultimately discovered it within myself. I bring this understanding into my work and am particularly passionate about supporting people of color, holding an intersectional lens to explore identity and the impact of oppression. I value authenticity, safety, integrity, empathy, humility, transparent communication, and the transformative power of relationships.

Together, we can co-create a space where your inner wisdom is honored, and your unique path unfolds with intention, care, and authenticity.
